Book Review

Name: _Lim Bo Yu, Jeff    (  18    )     Class: ____1E1______      Date:  21/6/2014___

Title of book:  Nick of Time (by Ted Bell)

Describe the most exciting/memorable part of the book. Why do you like it?

The most exciting part of the book was that Kate Mclver and Hobbes playing a spy game in a U-boat-a submarine which can travel at the fastest speed. Both Kate and Hobbes act really well in the spy game without getting caught by the Nazis. I found that it was very exciting.

If you could rewrite one part of the book, which part would it be and why? How would you like to rewrite it?

It would be the part of the battle between Mystère and Merlin as a lot of sailors died after the battle.  I would rewrite the story that after the battle, there were only a few of the sailors died.

List 3 new words that you have picked up from reading the book.

Klaxon -  a loud electric horn, formerly used on automobiles, truck, etc.

Forthwith -  immediately; at once; without delay.

Fifes -  a high-pitched transverse flute used commonly in military and marching musical groups.

Overcoming Struggles (Draft 2)

Hello! Jeff Lim here! Today I am going to talk about my school life, my primary school life.Well... I just realized how different secondary school life and primary school life are, but still I will tell you about my first year in my primary school.

First things first, I was from KUO CHUAN PRESBYTERIAN PRIMARY SCHOOL. There is a reason why I put it in capital letters. First, I love the school. Secondly, I made a lot of good friends and thirdly I am proud to be a student of this school. It was a very good school which allowed us to learn and play. When I first entered the school, the first thing I saw was the school's canteen. It was quite big but the canteen looked the same as other school's canteen. The hall if I remembered was bigger than the canteen. My primary school's classroom was on the first floor, like the other primary schools that my cousins went to.

When I was in Primary 1 to Primary 3, I did well for my examinations. From Primary 4 to Primary 5, I did badly for my class test. When my teachers saw what I got for my subjects, they gave me supplementary lessons and remedials to improve my understanding of the lesson. As a result, I did all right in my Primary 4 and 5 examinations. When I was Primary 6, I did not do well in my mid-year and preliminary examinations.

Luckily, my parents, teachers and friends encouraged me and cheered me on. They helped me by revising the chapters again and again and giving me tests to do. Once again, I put in more effort and hard work.  I managed to pass my PSLE. I was so happy I cried for joy. My parents were so happy, they brought me and my cousins to Gold Coast, Australia. It was the best thing that happened to me.

My reflections for English

The English lessons in Term 1 were excellent and helpful. We did blog entries, grammars editing, newspaper reading and letter writing. We even have a common Facebook account where teachers and students can exchange thoughts and view freely.

The blog entries we did were exciting. This is the first time that I have my own blog and I get to read other bloggers' view. I can learn from my friends' blog and share my thoughts. Through these blog entries, I get to know my friends better.

Grammars editing were fun as well. I have learned to find and correct grammar mistakes from the passages. This improves my English which is essential for most of the subjects.

The phrase book homework that we need to do weekly requires us to read through the newspapers and find words that we do not know. We have to look up the meaning for the words in the dictionary and learn them properly. It helps me to improve my vocabulary and know what is happening in Singapore and around the world.

For letter writing, I learned to write a friendly letter to my friend. The first time I heard about writing letters, I was grumpy as I do not like writing letters. Now I love writing letters and write emails to my cousins.

I am always weak in my English language. With the  learning experience and exposure I get from school, I am confident that I will improve over time.

To : The Kind Samaritan

17th February 2014

Dear Sir,

I am Grace Wong who works as a timekeeper with the Singapore School Transport Association, was in charge of keeping track of bus arrival and departure times for foreign workers to and from their dorms.

On 8 December 2013, at around 9pm, I told Mr Sakthivel Kumaravelu, 33, an Indian national construction worker, to get off a shuttle bus as it was already full. He staggered off the bus and moments after the bus moved off and made a left turn into Race Course Road, he was found pinned under one of its rear wheels.

As a result, a sea of onlookers near the bus surged forward at the crushing sound of the accident. Within minutes, they began pelting stones, beer bottles and sticks at the vehicle's windscreen.

I had suffered a bruised left eye, a fractured right hand, and cuts on my forehead, hands and legs. It could be worst if you had not pulled me out of the situation.

If it wasn't for you, I would be killed by the rioters who are pelting rocks and throwing glass shards at me.

I would like to thank you for saving me from the riots.

Yours sincerely,

Grace Wong

Movie Review

Name: _Lim Bo Yu, Jeff__    (  17  )     Class: _1E1_________      Date: __5/2/14_________

Title of movie: 2012

Describe the most exciting/memorable part of the movie. Why do you like it?

The most exciting part of the movie was when the actor, Jackson, picked up his family from his house to the airport. On the way to the airport, the buildings were falling apart, the highways and the roads were breaking apart and people were running and screaming for their lives.

If you could rewrite one part of the movie, which part would it be and why? How would you like to rewrite it?

The actor, Gordon was crushed to death by the machine when he was trying to reach the arch.  He should not die as he helped the family to fly the plane to reach China to board the arch. I would rewrite the story that he was rescued from being crushed by machine.

List 3 new words that you have picked up from watching the movie.

Knots – it refers to the speed of the plane.

Yellow Stone – it refers to a mountain in a country side

Conspiracy shelf – a place where they put all the books in different genres.

Draft 3: Introduction

Overcoming Struggles

When I was in Primary 6, I was under lots of stress. Since I did not do well in Primary 5, I was worried that I would not do well for my PSLE. I studied very hard since beginning of the year but things did not turn well as expected.  I was disappointed and discouraged by my mid year results.

Luckily, my parents, teachers and friends encouraged me and cheered me on. Once again, I put in greater effort and hard work.  I managed to pass my PSLE. This is the best things that happened to me.
